‘Where Pain Ends and Smiles Begin’
When root canal therapy fails or isn’t an option, surgical intervention may be recommended to save the tooth.
An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the apex (tip) of the tooth root to help prevent persistent infections. It might sound daunting, but this procedure is a safe and effective procedure that can save your tooth.
When is an apicoectomy required?
An apicoectomy may be recommended if your root canal has failed or if root canal therapy isn’t an option. A blocked or inaccessible root canal or a fracture in the tooth root may lead your dentist to recommend root canal surgery. Some root canals are difficult to access because of anatomical anomalies, making apicoectomy the only option to save the tooth.
How painful is an apicoectomy?
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area so you are as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure. Dental sedation is also an option if you are nervous about dental work or concerned about the duration of the treatment.
What happens if the apicoectomy fails?
If this procedure fails and you do not find relief from your symptoms, a second apicoectomy may be required. Alternatively, extraction and restoration may be recommended to help avoid further discomfort. At Silk Dental, we will make sure you understand the options available to you to make an informed decision about your treatment.
